Canada Immigration – Skilled Worker Visa

Canada welcomes skilled individuals to visit, live, study and work in Canada and contribute in its growing economy. Canadian immigration welcomes skilled workers as a permanent residence to add to their workforce strength. To make it easy to get Canadian PR as a skilled worker or professional, Canadian immigration offers several options to consider.

Different types of Canadian Skilled Worker Visa:

Express Entry is the new selection system launched by Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) for Canadian immigration, designed to select skilled workers for immigration to Canada. This electronic process chooses skilled immigrants (who qualify under Federal Skilled Worker Program/ Canadian Experience Class/ Federal Skilled Trades Program or a portion of Provincial Nominee Program) as permanent residents on the basis of their ability to settle in Canada and ability to contribute in Canadian economy. Under Express Entry, chosen candidates are offered the Invitation to Apply for Permanent Residency by the authorities.

Qualifying Criteria:

The candidate has to be eligible to immigrate under one of the below mentioned Federal Immigration Programs:

  • The Federal Skilled Worker Program
  • The Federal Skilled Trades Program
  • The Canadian Experience Class

The eligibility to receive the Invitation for Express Entry varies from Program to Program.

  • The candidate must have an Employment Offer approved by the competent authorities in Canada to qualify under first two programs (i.e. the FSWP and FSTP).
  • The candidate must receive a State Nomination under PNP (Provincial Nominee Program) and for Canadian Experience Class, they need to meet the selection criteria to apply for Permanent Residency under PNP.

If the candidate is eligible under any of the above programs, then

  • CIC adds the candidate in the pool of other eligible candidates
  • The candidates are ranked on the basis of various Factors
  • The top candidates are sent an Invitation to apply
  • Once the candidate receives invitation, he can apply online for permanent residence

Point Based System:

To rank the candidates, points based system is adopted by the CIC. A candidate is ranked a maximum of 1200 points under the Express Entry system.

  • For Human capital factors like age, education, experience, and language : 460 points
  • If an applicant has an accompanying spouse or common-law partner : 40 points
  • Transferable skills : 100 points
  • If the applicant has a job offer in Canada or have received Nomination Certificate from any of Canadian provinces : 600 points

Different types of Canadian Skilled Worker Visa :

The process after receiving online application for Express Entry:

Step 1- Candidates create an Express Entry profile:
Under this, candidates have to identify their skills and qualifications in an online resume. Based on these factors, the profile is ranked against other applicants indicating whether the candidate would be an asset to the Canadian workforce or not.

Step 2- Registration at Canada Job Bank site:
Applicants who do not have a Canadian job offer from an employer have to register themselves at the Canada Job Bank site or other private websites like www.jobsbankcanada.com

Step 3- Profile assessment:
Job banks profiles are assessed to judge candidates who meet the criteria of a Federal Economic Program and then upgraded with other entries in the Express Entry pool.

Step 4- Issuance of Invitation to Apply
Selected applicants are issued an Invitation to Apply, for which, they have to respond and to submit the required documents within 60 days’ time to qualify for permanent residence.

You will have to create a new profile if you are found not eligible for the previous one. However, you must only create a new profile if you had made a mistake in the first profile or your circumstances such as (language test results or work experience) are changed.

Why did I not get points for my job offer?

Under Comprehensive Ranking System a candidate should have a permanent job offer that is supported by a Labour Market Impact Assessment. To be able to score points on job offer, you must have a job offer that is supported by a Labour Market Impact Assessment. If you do not have that, you would need to register with Job Bank.

Provincial Nominee Program (PNP), complete assistance for which is offered by us here at WWICS, the global resettlement and immigration services provider, is an important fast-track alternative for gaining Canadian Permanent Residency. The Canadian immigration program allows investment based immigration, employment based immigration and immigration under certain specific situations.

The Government of Canada has worked out a number of territorial and provincial skilled immigration agreements keeping in mind the specific needs of employers and capital investment requirements for each geographical area. Therefore, most provinces of Canada also have their own Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) which are designed to encourage skilled workers from all over the world to settle in these provinces and contribute to the Canadian economy.

If you are looking forward to applying under the Provincial Nominee Program for Canada, we are the right people to contact to. At WWICS, we help you understand what a PNP program is, what its eligibility requirements are, and how to apply for the same. We have a team of expert consultants onboard who have extensive knowledge of the PNPs of each province of Canada, and can help you apply and gain permanent residency in Canada successfully for the one program you qualify for. At present, PNP exists in the following territories and provinces of Canada:

  • Alberta
  • British Colombia
  • Manitoba
  • Newfoundland and Labrador
  • Prince Edward Island
  • Yukon
  • New Brunswick
  • Nova Scotia
  • Saskatchewan

Under the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP), an employer has the liberty to nominate a limited number of candidates for certain skilled positions and further make an application to a participating state for sponsorship of the work permit for Canada. The following requirements apply under a Provincial Nominee program:

  • A position that cannot be filled by a citizen of Canada or a Permanent Resident
  • The position is full-time and permanent
  • The position is offered to a candidate who possesses the required qualifications
  • The position is offered to a candidate who possesses the required work experience
  • The position satisfies provincial nominee employment and wage standards.

While all the above mentioned territories and provinces have different PNP requirements to be met in order to gain sponsorship for a Canada work visa, there are certain essential requirements which are present in every case.

After obtaining sponsorship from a province under the Provincial Nominee Program, you will then be required to make a formal application to Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) for your Permanent Resident Visa. It is essential to keep in mind that sponsorship from any one of the above mentioned territories or provinces does not guarantee the approval of your Permanent Resident Visa. The final decision lies in the hands of Citizenship and Immigration Canada.

In addition to the basic criteria for qualification, you and your family will also be required to meet the following requirements to gain approval for a Permanent Resident Visa to Canada:

  • Take a medical exam
  • Provide evidence of good character
  • Abide by Canadian and Provincial laws

In general, there are two ways to immigrate to Canada as a Provincial nominee – either as a skilled worker with a job offer or as a business entrepreneur. Some Canadian provinces have sub categories on these basic categories. However, many provinces also have a special category for students who wish to obtain permanent residency and work in the province after their study. Additionally, those who have a family residing in Canada also qualify for permanent residency visa under this immigration program.

The significant benefit of being nominated under a PNP is that, it is immaterial if you do not have experience in an occupation listed on the Priority Occupation List under Federal Skilled Worker Class or if you have not scored minimum 67 points to qualify for Federal Skilled Category. All Canadian provinces and territories offer unrivalled Provincial Nomination Programs. WWICS assist its clients to immigrate to Canada under numerous options in each of the PNP Programs listed below. Click on the programs for details information.
